A Roomzy game

Play Mafia online with friends

Mafia on Roomzy is the classic bluffing and deduction game, played in the same room or over a video call. The shared screen shows the phase, the timer and who's alive; every player has a secret role and their moves on their own phone. No human host needed: Roomzy deals the roles, wakes the town and counts the votes.

About the game

Mafia is a game of bluffing, gut feeling and arguing your case. Almost everyone at the table is a civilian, a few are mafia, and nobody knows who's who. By day the town argues and votes someone out; at night the mafia secretly pick a victim. The town has to find every mafia member; the mafia have to survive to the end without giving themselves away. The best part isn't in the rules — it's between the players: someone defends their neighbor a little too eagerly, someone goes suspiciously quiet, and your best friend looks you in the eye and lies.

On Roomzy, Mafia keeps everything people love about it and drops what gets in the way of a live game:

  • the host gets to play — Roomzy deals the roles and wakes the town, with a narrator voice on the shared screen;
  • no cards, no peeking — your role arrives on your phone, and night moves are made on the phone too, in secret;
  • everyone taps the same way — the phone asks even players without a night move to pick someone, so nobody can read your role from your gestures;
  • timers keep the pace — the discussion doesn't drag on for half an hour, and the votes count themselves;
  • ten roles to choose from — from the classic mafia, detective and doctor to the Charmer, Bodyguard, Journalist and Maniac.

Great for parties and birthdays, office events and online nights with friends in different cities. The minimum is 4 players, and the heated debates really start at eight.

How to start a game

  1. Open Roomzy on a TV or laptop and create a room. Playing over a video call? Share the room tab in the call.
  2. Friends scan the QR code or type the room code on their phones. No app, and guests don't need to sign up.
  3. Pick the roles and the number of mafia — and start. The narrator explains the rules as you go.

You can play with four, but it's best with eight or more: more roles, more arguing. A free room fits up to 8 players, Premium up to 16.

Teams

  • Town — civilians and roles with special powers. They win when no mafia and no Maniac are left alive.
  • Mafia — they know each other. They win once they are at least as many as everyone else.
  • Maniac (if in play) — on their own. Wins if only one other player is left.

Roles

Role Team At night
Civilian town sleeps — their weapon is arguing and voting by day
Mafia mafia picks a victim together with the other mafia
Mafia Don mafia picks a victim with the mafia and checks whether a player is the Detective; if the mafia can't agree, the Don decides
Detective town checks a player: mafia or not
Sergeant town knows the Detective and sees their checks, and takes over if the Detective is out
Doctor town heals a player: if they were attacked, they survive
Charmer town distracts a player: their night move is lost
Bodyguard town guards a player: if they're attacked, the Bodyguard dies instead
Journalist town compares two players: same team or not
Maniac on their own kills one player

The host picks the roles and the mafia count in the room settings. Roles are dealt at random.

How a game goes

  1. Deal. Everyone looks at their role on their phone. The mafia see right away who else is mafia.
  2. Night. The town sleeps. Players with a night move pick a target on their phone before the timer runs out. Players without one are asked to pick too — who they suspect — so nobody can tell from your taps who has a role.
  3. Morning. The screen says who died during the night. Who healed or guarded whom stays secret; check results go only to whoever checked.
  4. Discussion. Argue out loud: who's suspicious, who's lying, who's covering for whom.
  5. Vote. On your phone, pick who to vote out, or abstain. Voting is open or secret — whichever the host set.

Then night falls again — until one side wins. At the end everyone sees all the roles, and you can start another game with the same settings right away.

The narrator speaks from the screen

There's no human host: Roomzy runs the game with a narrator voice on the shared screen. The room owner picks the style:

  • Family — for playing with kids, nothing rude;
  • Normal — jokes and dark humor;
  • 18+ — with swearing, only if everyone is 18 or older.

So nobody has to sit the game out to host it — the host plays too.

FAQ

How many people do you need for Mafia?

Mafia on Roomzy takes 4 to 16 players. How many you need to start depends on the roles you pick — the host screen will tell you. A free room fits up to 8 players, Premium up to 16.

Can you play Mafia online if everyone is in a different city?

Yes. Get on a call in Zoom or any other video app and share the room tab. Everyone plays from their own phone: the role and the vote are in their hands, and the discussion happens out loud on the call.

Do you need a host?

No. Roomzy deals the roles, announces night and morning, keeps the timers and counts the votes. The room owner can skip the wait when everyone is ready.

Do I need to install anything or sign up?

No. Roomzy runs in the browser: the TV or laptop is the screen, phones are the controllers. Guests join with the room code without signing up; only the person creating the room signs in with their email.

What if a player's phone disconnects?

Open the link again or enter the room code on roomzy.pro — you'll be back in the game with your role. If the phone died completely, you can join from another one and come back as the same player.
